Given their obvious skew toward IT functions, I sort of understood why they were slower to announce the significant change that cloud based technologies meant to the enterprise.
This is the press release for the Top 10 Strategic Technolgies for 2010. Cloud Computing is ranked No1...
Having been involoved in the cloud computing movement in NZ for the last 7 years, I have been seeing this change take place. Having a firm of Gartners ilk claiming this sort of thing is a seismic shift in the marketplace.
A few years ago I met with the Gartner analyst for "new technologies" in Sydney. We agreed that it was only "visionary CIO's" that could grasp the context of cloud... and I was deflated when he commented they were "few and far between". I guess this means that things have moved on in this respect.... great!
Very unsettling for the old school software guys... this trend will NEVER go back.
BTW...if you want to read a great book on this subject... you could do worse than The Big Switch. Definitely one of the best I have read to date that explains the "why"... thanks to Greg Woodham for putting me on to it.
QB.
